Svetlana Spajić, a celebrated traditional singer and cultural activist, has been awarded this year’s Heroes of Heritage award by Europa Nostra for her outstanding contribution to preserving and promoting intangible cultural heritage
Those who came before me, the exceptional elders, descendants of the singers Milman Parry once wrote about, are the focus of my gratitude and love tonight. They have elevated me to this recognition,” said Spajić at the award ceremony.
Plamena Halačeva, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, highlighted the significance of Spajić’s selection, stating:
“Svetlana’s recognition underscores the EU’s commitment to preserving Serbia’s unique cultural heritage as an integral part of our shared European legacy. Some fear that Serbia’s cultural identity might be diluted with EU accession, but the opposite is true – it will thrive, be protected, and celebrated as Serbia progresses on its path to EU integration.”
For the third consecutive year, the award has gone to a woman, further emphasising the vital role of women in safeguarding cultural heritage.
Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, Secretary General of Europa Nostra, praised the collaboration between the EU and Europa Nostra Serbia, adding, “This award promotes critical values, even in challenging times.”
Dr Slavica Vujović, President of Europa Nostra Serbia and jury chair, described Spajić as a bridge between tradition and modernity:
“Her work connects Serbian cultural heritage with contemporary European musical trends. Through her collaborations with globally acclaimed artists and performances at prestigious festivals and venues, Svetlana brings Serbia’s intangible cultural heritage to the world stage.”
Spajić’s collaborations include projects with Marina Abramović, such as the acclaimed theatre piece “The Life and Death of Marina Abramović”, directed by Robert Wilson, and other artistic ventures with luminaries like Domna Samiou and Antony Hegarty.
The jury for the award comprised prominent figures from Serbia’s cultural scene, underscoring the significance of Spajić’s lifelong dedication to preserving and celebrating the region’s rich vocal traditions.
