In a significant move towards modernizing its energy sector, the Serbian government, along with twenty scientific and academic institutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance the development and application of nuclear energy in Serbia.
The signing ceremony took place at the Palace of Serbia and marks a pivotal step in the country’s energy strategy.
The Memorandum was signed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Mining and Energy, Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Education, along with major entities such as Elektroprivreda Srbije, Elektromreža Srbije, the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, the Serbian Nuclear Society, and the Directorate for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security of Serbia, as well as faculties of economic, medical, and technical sciences.
Prime Minister Miloš Vučević emphasized that this initiative rectifies the ban on nuclear energy production imposed in the 1980s, which he described as a past error. “There is no doubt that the issue of electricity will be dominant and strategic, and investing in this sector will be a matter of sovereignty and independence for the state,” Vučević stated, highlighting that the focus is on peaceful nuclear energy.
Vučević assured that it is possible to develop nuclear energy while simultaneously protecting the environment and the health of Serbia’s citizens. This move aims to ensure Serbia’s energy sovereignty and align its energy policies with modern technological advancements.
This ambitious project underscores Serbia’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and positions the country at the forefront of nuclear energy development in the region.
