Johannes Hahn: “WB Strategy Opens The Road To EU Accession”

“The EU should provide assistance for the countries of the Western Balkans to move forward, so we should not discuss specific dates; it is important for the results to be produced and the tasks completed,”

Speaking at a conference in Belgrade entitled “Strategy for the Western Balkans, Opening the Way to EU Accession”, European Commissioner for Enlargement Johannes Hahn said that the EU’s new Enlargement Strategy for the Western Balkans is not a “blank cheque” and that all conditions must be met for EU membership, particularly those relating to the rule of law and the normalisation of relations with Priština. He added that “2025 is an indicative date and not carved in stone,” and that Serbia will, provided it meets the requirements, “potentially be ready for membership by that date”.

“The EU should provide assistance for the countries of the Western Balkans to move forward, so we should not discuss specific dates; it is important for the results to be produced and the tasks completed,” noted Hahn, amongst other things.
