The “For the Serbian People and State” Foundation has returned to Serbia a portrait of King Alexander Karađorđević, created after 1920 by one of Serbia’s most prominent artists, Paja Jovanović.
The Foundation purchased the portrait at an auction held by the international auction house Dorotheum.
The portrait is notable for being drawn in black chalk on paper, a unique technique within Jovanović’s body of work. The piece, measuring 20×15.2 cm and bearing the artist’s monogram, had previously been part of a private collection.
The Foundation has donated the artwork to the Museum of Yugoslavia, where it will become part of the permanent exhibition. This return of the portrait coincides with the 90th anniversary of King Alexander Karađorđević’s assassination in Marseille.
