In 2020 marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, a painter and architect, one of the most celebrated Renaissance artists

The remains of a genius from Urbino who, at only 37, passed away in Rome on 6 April 1520, the same day he was born in Urbino in 1483, are kept to his liking in the Pantheon of Rome. The plaque is engraved in Latin words given to him by Cardinal Pietro Bembo, a writer and humanist: “Here lies the famous Raphael, during whose life the great begetter of things (Nature) feared lest she be overcome, and at whose death Nature herself feared lest she die with him.”

On the Occasion of the 500th Anniversary of Raphael’s Death, the Italian Institute of Culture in Belgrade invites you to pay tribute to this famous Renaissance artist on Monday, 6 April by posting your drawings inspired by Raphael’s works on social networks (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) and/or your impressions of him using the hashtag #Raffaello500 and #Raffaello2020 while tagging our official site @iicbelgrado. All announcements will be shared on our social networks and the published announcement which by 12.00 on 8 April receive the largest number of “likes”, will be awarded an Italian language course via the Internet.

In addition, on 6 April, at noon, the Institute will post a mini-quiz on Raphael on its Facebook page, and the first participant who answers all the questions correctly will receive an Italian-language course via the internet as a reward.

Italian Institute of Culture in Belgrade also invites you to enjoy the splendour of Raphael’s art through the much content available online that you can find on the social platforms of the Italian Institute of Culture in Belgrade.
