57th Guca Trumpet Festival:

World’s Most Famous Trumpet Festival Opened

By raising the flag and after the openings song “Sa Ovcara i Kablara” for the 57th consecutive time, the Dragacev Trumpet Festival was opened yesterday. The brass bands walked through the streets of small town of Guca playing their songs to invite people from the whole world to dance and party till sunrise on the brass beats.

Guča is the most famous trumpet festival in the world. It is happening in the small town of Guča, which is located near the city of Čačak, in the Dragačevo district, about 200 km away from the Serbian capital Belgrade. Nowadays, it became very popular tourist destination. The festival draws music lovers from all over the globe as well as fans of traditional Balkan Music to come and spend a week eating traditional Serbian food, drinking plenty of rakija and dancing on the tables. The festival looks like one big and crowded fair followed by trumpet performances that you are unlikely to catch anywhere else.

“I didn’t know you could play trumpet that way” said famous Miles Davis, a Guča Festival visitor.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors are heading to Guča these days (from 9th to 13th August) to watch the top brass bands. With elimination heats earlier in the year, only the best of the best make it to this competition. The events kick off with an opening concert on Friday followed by Saturday night celebrations and Sunday’s competition. The winner of the brass band battle walks away with the Golden Trumpet.
