Tetra Pak celebrates the 21st anniversary of the Sustainable Development Report and presents its activities, investments and ambitions in this field.

Tetra Pak‘s approach to sustainability reporting has been significantly improved over the past two decades: from focusing on commitment to environmental protection and activities in that field, in the first report from 1999, to a detailed analysis of the impact of overall business on the environment through the consideration of each business segment , including social responsibility and supply chain management. The company has adopted a variety of self-assessment methods to comply with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, while supporting the United Nations Development Sustainability (SDGs), through a process called “materiality assessment”, all in aiming to provide the greatest possible impact in this area.

In this year’s Tetra Pak Sustainability Report, you will find out more about:

– Tetra Pak’s strategy for a portfolio of sustainable packaging and investment of 80 million euros in the development of paper straws, inseparable plugs and other solutions that will replace plastic straws made based on fossil fuels between 2019 and 2021.

– The way Tetra Pak achieves its ambition to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2020, through a cumulative reduction of CO2 and related gases by 10 million tonnes, starting from 2010 through a whole range of values.

– Assembling recycling partnerships with companies such as Veolia, to expand cooperation and accelerate the global process of recycling multilayer cardboard packaging for drinks. Tetra Pak’s investments in the collection and recycling infrastructure of multilayer cartons since 2012 amounted to 20 million euros, with the same goal in the company opening 45 new positions globally. In the region of Southeast Europe, Tetra Pak cooperates with various local organisations to improve the level of awareness about recycling. More than 23,500 children and teachers in Greece, Croatia, Northern Macedonia, Slovenia, Romania and Serbia took part in educational programs related to the environment supported by Tetra Pak in 2018.

– The way Tetra Pak’s Dairy Hub Center of Milk Products Center integrates small agricultural producers into the supply chain. In March 2019 Tetra Pak signed a proposal for a Terms of Reference for the first Milk Products Center in Albania. It is expected that this Center will increase the production of milk and the income of small agricultural producers by a minimum of 20-30%.

“Over the course of 20 years of my engagement in Tetra Pak, sustainable development has always been the core of our promise to protect food, people and the future,” said Mario Abreu, vice president for sustainable development. “The annual reporting process helps us to remain focused and committed to sustainable development, both internally and externally. On this path, we have learned a lot – especially about the importance of partnerships, the constant realization of small victories and complete transparency.”
