Generali donated 100,000 euros to the Government of the Republic of Serbia to strengthen the health system in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and the Vatreno oko laboratory for the purchase of laboratory materials and equipment, hygiene and disinfection products, office supplies and furniture, compensation for work and development of research -educational potential.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, COVID-19 Generali Insurance Serbia has taken action to protect and assist its employees, clients and partners in emergencies. With this donation, the company wants to support the future efforts of the scientific and health community and the Government of the Republic of Serbia in the fight against the coronavirus, but also other potential threats to human health.
The donation was provided from the funds of the Emergency International Fund of the Generali Group, which was established with the aim of supporting emergencies during the COVID-19 epidemic. It is available in the countries where is Generali operating. The fund provides immediate assistance and supports the economic recovery of countries affected by the pandemic.
President of the Executive Board of Generali Osiguranje Srbija Dragan Filipović, said about the donation: “The COVID-19 pandemic changed the lives of people around the world. With the desire to contribute to the efforts of health and scientific workers to adequately respond to the increased need for health protection, Generali is supporting the work of the Vatreno oko laboratory and the efforts of the Government of the Republic of Serbia to defeat the epidemic in Serbia.”
Vatreno oko, the national laboratory for molecular detection of infectious agents at the Clinical Center of Serbia, is unique in the region. A key part of the analysis performed in the laboratory relies on two robotic platforms that automatically isolate RNA and DNA and prepare samples for the final phase of analysis, thereby accelerating the flow of samples through the system and issuing results.
Strict laboratory biosafety protocols are unique in the region and were developed in collaboration with Chinese experts who were in Wuhan at the time of the epidemic.
Forty-seven experts from the Serrbias best scientific research institutions have been trained by Chinese colleagues and put their expertise in the function of helping society. The laboratory, which works 24 hours a day, is managed by Dr. Jelena Begović, director of the Institute for Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering at the University of Belgrade.
