The new Cypriot ambassador has a Ph.D. in International Relations and a Masters in Communications from Washington State University in the U.S. and he is a Post Doctoral Fellow of Harvard University and a Senior Associate Member of the University of Oxford.
In his diplomatic career, he served as Press Counsellor/Delegate of the Permanent Mission of Cyprus to the UN in New York from 1994 to 2001 and as Press Counsellor of the High Commission of Cyprus to Australia. He also served at the Permanent Representation of Cyprus to the EU in the Political and security Committee from 2004 to 2006.
Posted as a seconded national expert at the European Commission from 2006 to 2009, he was an officer of the European Commission for international relations and international coordination for the Americas, before rejoining the Permanent Representation of Cyprus to the EU during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. After serving as Head of the Asia & Oceania Department at the MFA in 2014-2015, he became High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus to India and ASEF Governor for Cyprus.
Prior to arriving in Belgrade, Ambassador Theophylactou served from 2018 to 2020 as head of the Development Cooperation & Humanitarian Aid Department at the Cypriot MFA. Apart from his native Greek, he is fluent in English and French and proficient in Italian, Spanish and Turkish.
