The European Parliament (EP) has elected Alessandra Moretti, a member of the Socialists and Democrats from Italy, as chair of the EU-Serbia Stabilization and Association Committee, the European Western Balkans (EWB) portal reported.

After the departure of Tanja Fajon from that position, it was speculated that the Cypriot Demetris Papadakis, who is the shadow rapporteur for Serbia in front of the group of Socialists and Democrats, or Thais Retten, the Dutch MP who led the EP observation delegation in the elections, could be in that position.

According to inter-party agreements, that place belongs to the group of Socialists and Democrats, which gathers the parties of the center-left.

Moretti was first elected to the European Parliament in the 2014 elections, but withdrew a year later due to the elections in Italy, and then re-entered in 2019.
