The latest MasterIndex research by Mastercard into the financial needs and habits of active card users in Serbia (published June 2017) shows that most cards used in Serbia are debit cards (47% of respondents), a reduction of 27% compared with September last year.
The number of respondents who use either a credit or debit card has grown by a quarter (from 13% to 37%) whille the number who use a credit card only remains stable from last year at 8%.
Payment cards are used at least once a week by 77%. Debit cards are mostly used to buy food (65%), fuel (28%) and clothes (26%), while credit is a priority when buying furniture and electrical goods (45%), clothes (41%) and food (32%).
For payments of over 1,500 dinars a whole 71% reach for the plastic, a quarter more than in 2016.
The possibility of contactless or online payment is cited by 37% as the reason to obtain their card, followed by the network of ATMs and branches (36%) and deferred payments and insurance (33%).
